Crypt: Game README

Everything you need to play. Mouse over anything on the map for details.

Goal. Descend five floors. Kill the boss on Floor 5. Survive long enough to climb out. Die and your corpse becomes a piece of the world for other players to loot.

Movement

  • Arrows or WASD for cardinal directions.
  • QEZC (or numpad 7 9 1 3) for diagonals. Yes, you can move and attack diagonally.
  • Walk into a monster to attack it. Walk onto an item to pick it up.
  • > is the stairs down. Step onto the stairs tile to descend to the next floor. There is no way back up.

Keys

  • 1–9 cast spells / use abilities (varies by class).
  • Space is your class signature: berserk / ambush / spell burst.
  • i inventory · ? bestiary · ; examine adjacent tile
  • p / r / f quaff potion / read scroll / fire bow (Rogue)
  • Esc closes any modal.

Reading the map

  • Lowercase letters are weaker (rat, goblin, bat). Uppercase are stronger (Ogre, Wight, Dragon).
  • Items: ( weapon · [ armor · ! potion · ? scroll · = ring · $ gold · % corpse · & merchant
  • The crown glyph next to a monster name means it's a boss.

Tips

  • Death is permanent. No reloading saves to undo a mistake.
  • The game auto-saves after every action. Closing the tab is safe.
  • Mana regenerates 1 every 10 turns. HP does NOT regenerate -- heal via potions or artifacts.
  • Heavy gear makes you stumble (adjacent monsters get a free hit). Watch the weight bar.
  • Encumbrance tiers by weight vs your carry cap: Light (under 80%) no penalty, Medium (80-94%), Heavy (95-100%), Overloaded (over 100%). Medium and up risk a stumble each turn.

Your character

Every run picks a race and a class. Base stats are 20 HP, 3 ATK, 0 DEF. Race and class modifiers stack on top.

Races

RaceHPATKDEFPot.CarryVisionQuirk
Hobbit−10+1+2−4−1 25% chance each hostile monster fumbles its turn every round
Man+300000 +5% bonus on every gold pickup (rounded)
Elf0+1+10−2+1 +1 bow damage
Dwarf+5−1+10+60 3 wallcarve charges per run (press X)

Classes

ClassLoadoutPot.ManaSignature
Warrior heirloom sword +3, leather armor +1, +5 innate ATK 32 Power Strike (Space)
Rogue rusty dagger +1, no armor 32 Backstab (passive) + Ambush (Space)
Mage no weapon, no armor, Ring of Lightness, -1 innate ATK (fragile in melee, fights with spells). Spells: Magic Missile, Fireball, Frost Nova from L1. More spells unlock as you level up. 48 Spell picker (Space)
Necromancer rusty dagger +1, no armor, -1 innate ATK, 4 souls. Raises skeletons (2 souls), ghouls (5), revenants (10) 24 Raise picker (M or Space)

Space dispatches your class signature. Warrior arms Power Strike, Mage opens the spell picker, Necromancer opens the raise picker. Rogue lies in wait: each Space press holds still for a turn, and after 3 turns the next strike is an Ambush that ignores armor and hits for 5x (an armed Ambush replaces Backstab, it does not stack). The Necromancer harvests souls from kills: +2 for your own kills, +1 for minion kills.

The boss ladder

Each dungeon is five floors deep, with a different boss on Floor 5:

DungeonBoss
DL1: Goblin PitGoblin Chieftain
DL2: Troll HoldTroll
DL3: Wraith HallsWraith King
DL4: Dragon RoostDragon
DL5: Lich's TombLich, the final boss

Tutorial tips

Small tip pop-ups appear as you play the first time you hit a new situation (your first monster, first item, the stairs, low health, and so on). Each has a No more pop-ups box, and you can turn them on or off any time with the Tips switch in the top bar.

Crypt is built by one person. Email the developer with what worked, what didn't, what you wish was different.

Save and quit?

Your run will be saved and the page will reload. The next time you open Crypt, you can resume right where you left off.

Heads up: the save is consumed when you resume. If your character dies after that, the save is gone — true permadeath, no take-backs. Only one save slot.

Resume your saved run?

A saved run was found.
Resuming consumes the save. If you die afterward, there is no reload — your run ends for good. (That's the deal.)
